Local Hero, Bruno Serato, Feeds Kids in America by Steven Musielski and Thanh-Tam Candice Vu
Restaurateur and proprietor of the famed Anaheim White House, Bruno Serato was a Board Member of the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club. This may seem like uninteresting news to most, however, with Bruno involved in the club, the 300 child members he feeds every night are ensured they will have at least one proper meal that day. For seven years, Bruno Serato has been giving away dinners to Anaheim’s hungry “motel kids”, children whose entire families live in motel rooms, often without kitchens, due to financial difficulties. Without Bruno Serato’s consistent generosity, they would most certainly be going to be with an empty stomach with no better prospects for the following day.
This daily gift is a direct product of Bruno’s very modest upbringing in Italy and France and his inspirational mother. One day in 2005, Bruno and his mother, Caterina, were visiting the Boys & Girls Club when his mother insisted Bruno feed these children pasta upon seeing a boy eating a bag of chips for dinner. Starting with nearly 80 kids, Bruno began making pasta dinners five nights a week. Thus, Caterina’s Club was born. Today, over 300 children are offered free pasta seven evenings a week. “When I started the original year, I knew I was going to do this for some time, but I never dreamed that seven years later I’d still be doing this every single day. It’s really amazing to me,” says Bruno. Caterina’s Club was created to honor his hardworking mother who worked in potato fields, managing a restaurant and many other jobs to feed her family, but without steady customers flowing into the Anaheim White House’s dining rooms, Bruno cannot afford to keep giving away more meals than he sells. Thankfully, appearances on the CBS Evening News, articles in People Magazine and The Huffington Post and an endorsement by Oprah on her official Facebook page, the selfless restaurant owner has garnered major public attention.
Currently, nominated as a Top 10 CNN Hero, Bruno was given $50,000 to fund his food program. He is in the running to become the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year, whose prize will be an additional $250,000. Bruno is grateful for the prize he has already won, but his focus is expanding from feeding just northern Orange County motel children to feeding all of the hungry children in America. To make this possible, he needs people to vote for him at http://heroes.cnn.com/vote_en.aspx, via email or via Facebook until December 7, 2011, to create collaborations through the United States between chefs or restaurants and Boys & Girls Clubs, fulfilling Bruno’s ultimate goal of ending child hunger completely. Alone, Bruno Serato has overcome adversity by growing up in poverty and arriving in the U.S. with only $200 in his pocket without knowing English, eventually becoming a restaurant owner and local hero. He has single-handedly given away over 344,000 meals to hungry motel kids. “If I can do that alone, feeding 300 children everyday, imagine what we can do together! We can feed millions of kids. I tell people that I’m not a magic man. I do it with my own hands, in my own kitchen, with my own pasta. Together we can do something to change the world.” It is our responsibility as a community to help Bruno make this happen. Vote for Bruno to become 2011 CNN Hero of the Year.
