Contemporary video games might be a strange and unusual thing for someone that is just getting into it for the first time. There are different companies involved than a few decades ago, and new portable systems. There are even motion controls available on some systems which go further to immerse the player in the experience.

The Big Three

When it comes to console gaming, there are three major competing companies. They are Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Nintendo is a familiar name and makes systems such as the portable Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii. Microsoft makes the XBOX line of video game systems and Sony is popular for its PlayStation, the major systems Sony had made recently are the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Many of the new game systems feature online game play. If you have a high speed (or even a wireless internet connection) you can play friends and even strangers from all over the world.

Motion Controls

The Nintendo Wii primarily uses motion controls. This means the player holds the control and it’s motion is sensed by the system. If you swing it like a sword, your character will swing their sword. The PlayStation 3 has integrated this type of technology and even Microsoft has a similar project in the works. Motion controls are easier to pick up and play then a control that has many random buttons on it. This makes video games more appealing to the casual gamer and older gamers who are not familiar with modern game controllers.
